I am a first-generation lawyer. I was passionate about law from my childhood days. But, I did not have anyone to guide me on this journey. I struggled for the right advice on many occasions, on a myriad of matters, ranging from internships to career options. Now, two decades later, I often come across young law students, immensely talented and ambitious, struggling to find the right path. I find shades of me in them! This is where I thought, I must volunteer and try to make a difference in their lives!
The UAE has declared 2017 as the ‘Year of Giving’. As HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and the Ruler of Dubai, has aptly summarized – ‘giving is defined by the differences we make: the differences in someone’s life, in a society, or in a nation’.
I was recently invited by Microsoft and Middlesex University, UK to be part their joint initiative – ‘Future Lawyer’s Network’ – a wonderful program to mentor law students. I found it extremely gratifying to guide my young friends, enthusiastic to embrace an enterprising career. By sharing what I have experienced and learnt, I hope I can make a difference in their lives.
I am beginning with a humble step, by providing a platform for my young friends to express themselves! I invite enterprising law students from across the world to write on this page. You may write on any topic of law touching our lives – an introduction of your country’s legal system, foreign investment, business, employment, immigration, taxation – all are welcome.
Dare to dream my young friends! The world is all yours!
